Americans do not Eat Enough Produce

According to an AC Nielsen poll of 2,472 people (conducted on behalf of the Produce for Better Health Foundation, August 23, 2004), more than 85% of consumers are not eating the federally recommended minimum of five servings of produce a day. Nearly half of those questioned ate just one or two servings of produce a day and 3% reported that they ate no produce at all. Most are unclear on how much produce they should be eating. Nearly 60% think eating one to four servings is enough for a healthy diet; 20% said one or two servings is enough.

Government recommendations are two to four servings of fruit and three to five servings of vegetables daily. Only 12% of the respondents met this requirement. The government recommendations are likely to increase.
